How did Gandhi change society for the better?

Non violence was his motto.Are India and Pakistan non-violent today? Honestly, I can't say because I don't live in either of the two countries, but I have always been led to believe that Gandhi was respected and admired for his beliefs and his actions. Perhaps Indian and Pakistani people will have more to add and to fill out the picture.
